The Vibe
A typical Tokyo outfit is well-structured, minimalistic and often a bit oversized. High quality basics from UNIQLO or similar brands are very common. Footwear leans comfortable and stylish – sneakers are paired with every type of look. Socks are a must, given the shoes-off indoors culture. Though the aesthetic leans largely monochromatic in much of the city, you’ll find a lot of bold, creative looks in areas like Harajuku or Shimokitazawa. In these hip districts, layering bold prints and sporting carefully curated vintage attire is quite common. In general, people in Tokyo dress with intention, are well-put together, and dress fairly conservatively. To blend in, avoid athletic clothes, anything too cropped, spaghetti straps, and excessive cleavage.
What To Pack
Whatever time of year you’re planning to travel, be sure your apparel is weather appropriate. Tokyo has fairly mild winters, with average temps falling between 35° and 55° F. Summers can be quite hot, with average highs in the upper eighties. We suggest: Structured tees. A long, weather-appropriate jacket -- a light trench or wool coat. Stylish sneakers or comfortable boots. Wide legged jeans paired with a button-up. Trousers and a sweater. A large tote.
